London Olympics buying carbon offsets

Striving to meet the London Olympics’ goal of conducting the international games in a sustainable manner, British Petroleum (BP) America will buy 400,000 carbon offset credits to cover the transportation emissions of US participants.

Although BP estimates that the US athletic department will only emit about 4,500 tons of carbon dioxide, the additional 395,500 carbon offset credits will be made available to spectators traveling to the London Olympic Games.

Embracing the international aspect of the Olympics, BP America selected carbon offset projects from around the world, representing five continents.

To ensure the integrity of the carbon offsets, the selected projects have been registered through well-established, accredited carbon registries.
