Apple Shrinks Carbon Footprint

Apple says its carbon footprint shrank by 3 percent from 2012 to 2013, the first time it’s seen a year-over-year decline since it began tracking the numbers in 2009.

The company, in its 2014 Environmental Responsibility Report, also says its carbon footprint from energy use dropped by 31 percent from fiscal 2011 to fiscal 2013, while its overall energy consumption increased by 42 percent during that time. Apple credits its renewable energy use for its shrinking carbon footprint and says it’s powering 145 US retail stores and all of its Australian retrial stores with renewable energy.

Apple’s annual report also says water use rose in 2013 to 29 cubic meters per employee from 20 in 2012, partially due to construction and expansion.

In a blog post, Apple says it’s “committed to addressing” carbon emissions from its manufacturing partners, the largest portion of its carbon footprint.
